Dr. Mark McClellan's nomination as Commissioner of Food and Drugs.
The U.S. Senate has confirmed Dr. Mark McClellan's nomination as Commissioner of Food and Drugs. McClellan is an internist who has earned a doctorate in economics and written extensively about Medicare and managed care issues. The White House announced his nomination on Sept. 25.
McClellan won the backing of HELP committee members after an Oct. 8 hearing held to consider his nomination but, according to media accounts, a vote by the full Senate was delayed because of a disagreement between Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson and a key senator regarding the State Children's Health Insurance Program.
